Current Issues in Cross-Border Data Protection – 9 December 2020 (via Zoom – 5pm – 6.15pm GMT)

With the end of the transition period following the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union in sight and with the final repercussions of the judgment of the Court of Justice in Case C 311/18 Data Protection Commissioner v Facebook Ireland Ltd (“Schrems II”) yet to be seen, our panel address current issues affecting the law on data crossing borders and consider the challenges that may lie ahead.

The speakers

Catherine Donnelly SC practises at the Bar of Ireland and from Blackstone Chambers in London. She is a Fellow and Associate Professor at Trinity College Dublin and is one of the editors of De Smith’s Judicial Review.  She specialises in European, public and commercial law and regularly appears before national courts and the Court of Justice of the European Union.

Rupert Paines is a barrister practising from 11KBW in London.  He specialises in data protection among other areas and is ranked as a leading junior for data protection in both the Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners. He formerly worked as a judicial assistant at the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.

Dr Gabriela Zanfir-Fortuna is Senior Counsel at the Future of Privacy Forum, where she leads the work on global privacy developments and European data protection law and policy. She previously worked for the European Data Protection Supervisor in Brussels and was part of the team that advised on the GDPR during its legislative process.

Eileen Barrington SC is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin, the King’s Inns and the College of Europe, Bruges. She commenced practice in 1994 and was called to the Inner Bar in 2011. She practices mainly in the areas of European, commercial and administrative law. She has been a member of the Legal Services Regulatory Authority in Ireland since its creation in 2016.
